Stoveteam international

2019 Annual Report

Almost two billion meals and counting!

We decided to have some fun and try to determine how many meals have been cooked on the stoves produced by our partner factories.

To date, StoveTeam’s partner factories have distributed over 76,300 cookstoves.

Since the number of people in each household is 7.5 people, we multiplied 76,300 by 7.5 people, then by three meals per day, 365 days per year, and for a stove’s conservative average lifespan of three years and came to 1,879,841,250 meals prepared without smoke in the home!

Each of our partner factories continue to grow and expand in new ways:

E’Copan - 8,992 stoves produced to date

EcoComal - 31,924 stoves produced to date

Inversiones Falcón - 27,115 stoves produced to date

Fabrica Avanza - 2,671 stoves produced to date

Total: 76,300 stoves, impacting the lives of approximately 572,250 people!

Putting boots on the ground

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we were finally able to launch the search for our first International Program Coordinator at the end of 2019. This new staff position will live full-time in Guatemala to coordinate monitoring and evaluation and the expansion of our educational programs!

Our dedication to women’s empowerment continues

Elida Olivas has been working in our partner factory in Nicaragua for years, helping to steward the factory through Nicaragua’s difficult economic times. At the end of 2019, Elida was given the opportunity to purchase the factory from its previous owners and she seized the opportunity!

We are so excited to work with Elida to help the factory reach its greatest potential!

A certified reduction in carbon emissions

StoveTeam’s partnership with carbon credit company Microsol resulted in some exciting news: Each of our Ecocina cookstoves has been certified to reduce 10.5 tons of CO2 over its lifespan, equivalent to over half the yearly carbon emissions of the average American.

This determination has given StoveTeam the confidence to pursue more carbon offset deals, structuring sustainable forms of income for our partner factories, and building lasting corporate partnerships.

Raising awareness

A big part of StoveTeam’s role is sharing our knowledge about the issue of open-fire cooking. We take every opportunity to speak, from the dozens of Rotary clubs we speak to every year to our founder Nancy Hughes’ 2019 speeches to an assembly at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and the Andrus Center “Women and Leadership Conference” at Boise State University.

Giving people the opportunity to take action

In 2019 StoveTeam led two volunteer trips with a total of 38 volunteers to help build and distribute Ecocina cookstoves in Guatemala. Our annual trip in October included five kids under 18 years old, all of whom had a great time and even spoke about their experience via video chat!

New staff and a new vision for the future

In 2019 we bid a fond farewell to Communications Manager Meaghan Bogart and Executive Director Katie Laughlin. This staff change was challenging but it allowed StoveTeam to welcome two bright new faces to our staff.

Forest Resener joined StoveTeam’s staff as Communications and Operations Director in July of 2019. Longtime Program Director Mike Hatfield assumed the role of Interim Executive Director. And a new Development Director, Shelby Kardas, came on in August of 2019!

Shelby brings over 20 years of experience in nonprofit management and fundraising to her new role, while Forest uses his experience in business development to streamline and modernize StoveTeam’s communications and operations.
