StoveTeam & ROtary, AN Impactful Partnership
StoveTeam is fortunate to have strong partnerships with Rotary Clubs across the globe. Rotary International is a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to making a positive impact in local communities and beyond. StoveTeam leverages this extensive network of Rotary Clubs to create awareness, raise funds, and implement clean cookstove projects in collaboration with local communities. The partnership between StoveTeam International and Rotary Clubs is based on shared goals of improving health, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable development. Rotary Clubs provide essential support through fundraising efforts, grants, and volunteer engagement. By leveraging the resources and expertise of Rotary Clubs, StoveTeam International is able to amplify its impact and bring life-changing benefits to individuals and communities in need.
How To Get Involved
Looking to introduce StoveTeam International to your Rotary Club? Or looking to support StoveTeam through a club donation or Rotary District Grant? We would love to present to your club and/or work with your club to help submit a grant for the production and placement of fuel-efficient stoves in indigenous communities in Central America.
SUPPORTING STOVETEAM’S WORK IN TOTONICAPÁN
In Guatemala, over six million households urgently need clean cookstoves, as more than 54% of the population relies on solid fuels for daily cooking—this figure rises to nearly 90% in rural areas. Household air pollution from open-fire cooking leads to nearly 4,500 deaths annually, including over 700 children who die from acute respiratory infections caused by smoke exposure. StoveTeam is committed to helping Guatemalan families in rural communities access safe, clean cookstoves. With the support of Rotary clubs and NGO partners, we’re now active in four rural departments across Guatemala, installing more than 1,000 fuel-efficient cookstoves each year.
This year, we continued our partnership with the EcoLogic Development Fund to bring 300 stoves to families in Totonicapán, an area where EcoLogic also conducts critical reforestation efforts. This collaboration is especially impactful, aligning with Rotary International’s focus areas of Economic Development and Sustainability.
Looking ahead to 2025, we plan to expand our reach and build even more stoves in the region. Your Rotary Club can be a part of this life-saving project. Our Rotary Partnership in Nuevo Palmar
CLEAN COOKSTOVES FOR Nuevo Palmar
We are excited to share information about our most recent Rotary Partnership Project, Clean Cookstoves For Nuevo Palmar, headed by District 5100’s White Salmon-Bingen Rotary Club and hosted by the Club Rotario de Retalhuleu. This project is focused on the placement of 70 Justa Cookstoves in the community of Nuevo Palmar in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Clubs across District 5100 came together to support a District Grant submitted by the White Salmon-Bingen Rotary Club. With general club support as well as district matching funds, we successfully raised $17,500 for the placement of 70 cookstoves. This project will begin in 2025 with the support of several members of the Club Rotario de Retalhuleu, the mayor from Nuevo Palmar, and several community leaders.
Power Of Rotary Partnerships
We are grateful for the continued partnership we have with Rotary Clubs both in the US and in Guatemala.
Clubs in Georgia, USA and Retalhuleu, Guatemala came together to develop an ongoing project that, to date, has resulted in the placement of 500 Justa stoves in the Retalhuleu region of Guatemala.
Steffanie Sorrels is a Rotarian of the Rotary Club of Winder, GA, a Guatemalan, and a Champion of StoveTeam International. Steffanie introduced us to the need in Retalhuleu in February 2022 and coordinated a partnership with Club Rotario Retalhuleu. With a goal to raise $10,000, Steffanie traveled throughout the state of Georgia sharing about the danger of open-fire cooking and the impact of StoveTeam’s work. Steffanie gathered support from over ten Rotary Clubs in Georgia, exceeding her goal and raising over $11,000.
“My motivation for getting involved was simply because I saw a basic need and I knew that there was a way to make life better for this community. Connecting the Rotary Club of Retalhuleu with StoveTeam, and being able to assist both groups from 1,500 miles away has been as much of a blessing to me as the Justa stoves are to the families receiving them.”-Steffanie Sorrels
This stove project also brought us Francisco Quevedo, President of Club Rotario Retalhuleu, and club member, Jose Carlos. Francisco and Jose have been vital resources to StoveTeam International and the Retalhuleu stove project. Francisco helped to facilitate this project, providing technical support and resources. Francisco continues to go above and beyond, assisting with the placement of stoves throughout Retalhuleu, the transportation of materials and labor, the donation of materials, housing for stove builders, and storage space. Jose is a dedicated supporter of StoveTeam and a leading member of his community. With Jose’s guidance and support, we built and placed 100 stoves in the town of Caballo Blanco.
Support from Rotarians like Steffanie, Francisco, and Jose help StoveTeam make a greater impact in the communities that need us the most.
